BELLMEAD–The Kerens High School Bobcat Band scored straight 1s at the 1A/2A Region 8 marching contest, held Oct. 15 at La Vega High School in Bellmead, near Waco.
The band has scored 39 consecutive first-division ratings at marching, concert and sight-reading contests over the past 5 years, according to band director Brian Smetzer.
“Every single time they have gone to competition on the field and stage, a judge thought they earned an A. This is unprecedented in the history of the Kerens Band,” Smetzer said.
The band will see six more judges in early March at the concert and sight-reading contests in Groesbeck, with three judges for each contest. If successful at continuing their streak of straight As, the band will bring home a fifth-consecutive UIL Sweepstakes Award for superior yearlong achievement, which will be a new Kerens record.
The state marching contest is held every two years, Smetzer said, so the region competition was the last competitive stop for the marching band in 2019 until wrapping up football season and shifting its focus to concert season.
