Kerens picks up first win over Cross Roads with shutout
KERENS–Kerens beat Cross Roads, 40-0, in both teams’ 9-2A Division 1 opener, with Kerens snapping a season-long losing streak before an Oct. 11 homecoming crowd.
Hoping to remain undefeated in district play, Kerens next faced Leon High School in an Oct. 18 home contest, against the 0-6 Cougars.
Versus winless Cross Roads, Kerens’ Josh Brown ran for more than 150 yards, including a 97-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. The long run came on the first play following a Cross Roads fumble, one of many coughed up by the visitors from Henderson County.
Cross Roads started the game with a successful onside kick recovery at midfield and converted a fourth down in Kerens territory before punting. Trey York picked up a third-quarter interception for Cross Roads, which also blocked the extra point on Kerens’ last touchdown.
Corey Davis opened Kerens’ scoring with a 14-yard touchdown run on fourth down. Adaybran Davis returned a Cross Roads punt 59 yards for Kerens’ second touchdown as the first quarter expired. Jaden Mullen recovered a Cross Roads fumble for Kerens’ third touchdown, pushing their lead to 20-0 after a missed extra point.
A 4-yard Daniel Fernandez touchdown put Kerens up 26-0 before halftime (the 2-point conversion pass fell incomplete). Brown’s 97-yard score and Desmond Lindsey’s 2-point conversion catch accounted for a 34-0 lead. Late in the game, Davis scored his second touchdown, this time from 16 yards out, to seal the 40-0 Kerens win.
