Lady ’Cats bump district record to 4-5 overall in 2019
KERENS–The Kerens Lady ’Cats triumphed in three sets over the Oakwood Lady Panthers in Oct. 8 league play to improve their district record to 4-5.
Kerens hosted Oakwood after losing Oct. 1 at Neches, 3-0, and falling Oct. 5 at Cayuga, 3-1. The Lady ’Cats continued their district schedule with an Oct. 11 match at Cross Roads, followed by two home games: Oct. 15 against Trinidad and Oct. 18 versus Latexo.
Against Oakwood, Kerens took early control of the first set, jumping to a 9-1 lead. Blocks by Emilee Burleson and Madison Parks, as well as two more blocks from Elyasa Morgan, contributed points to help Kerens win the first set, 25-9.
Oakwood rolled to a 4-0 second-set lead, which Kerens quickly cut to 4-2. Oakwood surged ahead again to take an 8-2 advantage and eventually led 12-4.
A Kerens rally tied the second set at 15, after which the set went back and forth. Tied at 22, McAdams racked up two blocks for points to put Kerens ahead, 24-22. Oakwood’s return of a Reece Wright serve fell out of bounds to end the second set at 25-22, Kerens.
Kerens dominated the third and final set, taking a 14-1 lead behind a Kenadee Lynch ace and multiple kills from Morgan and McAdams. With Kerens leading 22-11, an Oakwood front-row player was injured, and with no reserves, the Lady Panthers finished the match with five players. Kerens won the third set, 25-13, to sweep Oakwood in straight sets.
